Sun-Earth Day Presents: Eclipse, In a Different Light

Local Happenings: International

ARGENTINA

Espacio Profundo March 29

We have observers in Brazil, Spain and Portugal. We are going to help some student and amateur astronomers in those countries with their video and photographic records.

AUSTRALIA

Sydney

Sydney Observatory March 29

Total Solar Eclipse Under the Stars: see a spectacular total Solar Eclipse live as it occurs in the Northern Hemisphere (in the vicinity of Turkey) via special webcast while you watch the stars and the planet Saturn, all from Sydney Observatory. Bookings and pre-payments essential.

BELGIUM

BULGARIA

Stara Zagora

Solar-Terrestrial Influences Laboratory “Acad. Dimitar Mishev” – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Stara Zagora Department March 29

We work together with the scientists of Yuri Gagarin Public Astronomical Observatory, Stara Zagora and Gemma Astroclub of the Amateur astronomers. We successfully observed the 1961- Stara Zagora, 1990 – Kem, Russia, 1999 – General Toshevo, Bulgaria eclipses. This one we shall observe from Turkey. We’ll conduct a lot of experiments in collaboration:
  • Photometric investigation of the White corona structure and polarization.
  • Investigation of the structure of monochromatic emission corona in green (Fe XIV, λ=5303Ǻ) and red (Fe X, λ=6374Ǻ) line, Ha, and the thermal corona in the 2¸5 μm region of the Infrared spectrum
  • Determining of the dynamics of basic microclimatic parameters of the 10 m ground atmospheric layer.
We foresee a lot of public lectures and lectures in the classroom before the eclipse and during the Solar week, TV and radio emissions, series of articles in the newspapers.

Yuri Gagarin Public Astronomical Observatory March 29

We work with the teachers, students and citizens of the town of Stara Zagora, with the Gemma Astroclub of the Amateur astronomers. We have an Astronomy school (groups of students involved in the three year extra-curriculum Astronomy program) with six problem groups and regular public lectures. Every year we organize teacher training courses for teaching astronomy at different levels. We work in collaboration with Solar-Terrestrial Influences Laboratory “Acad. Dimitar Mishev” – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Stara Zagora Department and we have a special program for the March 29, 2006 total solar eclipse observation:
  • Photometric investigation of the White corona structure and polarization.
  • Investigation of the structure of monochromatic emission corona in green (Fe XIV, λ=5303Ǻ) and red (Fe X, λ=6374Ǻ) line, Ha, and the thermal corona in the 2¸5 μm region of the Infrared spectrum
  • Determining of the dynamics of basic microclimatic parameters of the 10 m ground atmospheric layer.
We foresee an open telephone at the Observatory in the day of the eclipse and everybody will have the possibility to ask different questions. A lot of public lectures and lectures in the classroom will be given before the eclipse and during the Solar week, TV and radio emissions, series of articles in the newspapers.

EGYPT

Astronomical InstituteMarch 29

We are preparing educational lectures for school students all over Egypt from 1 February, until the time of the eclipse.

When I returned from The Astronomical Institute of Romanian Academy, Bucharest 11Aug,1999, I knew that thousands of peoples, and students refused to get out from their homes fearing from increasing harmful solar UV emission, this was due to misunderstanding from the warnings to not look directly at the sun.

Since that day I did my best in the multimedia to simplify the solar information, specially, natural phenomena like lunar and solar eclipse, sun earth connection, and I edit a book concerning every thing about the eclipse , how to observe, take nice photos during eclipse, training before the phenomena, Ö

INDIA

AstrovisionMarch 29

Our team is working to popularize Astronomy among the school children. This winter we are holding number of Sky parties and lectures in the schools, in preparation for the eclipse.

Kutch Astronomy ClubMarch 29

We are planning to organize an event to see the Sun Eclipse for general public and school students. As it can be seen as a partial eclipse here.

We will educate the students about the science of an eclipse. We are staying in a remote part of India and there are also some fears about the Eclipse.

People pray at the time of Eclipse and after eclipse is over they used to take a bath! The water and food that is in house is thrown out before Eclipse and people make fresh food and bring fresh water from out side! Many people do not take any food or water during eclipse!

The pregnant woman does not do any activity during a solar or lunar eclipse and she will remain idle and will not look at Sun or Moon because people believe that if she does the baby in her will be damaged, i.e. if she cut any thing the baby will have cut mark on his/her body.

(On 3rd October 2005 we organized a function during an eclipse and took food and tea for more than 300 people including students to demonstrate that no harm is done if we take food during Eclipse)

We want people to understand the real science behind such a phenomena.

ROMANIA

Bucharest

Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy Solar Department March 29

We are preparing some conferences for educators as well as for the students and a Symposium for public will be held on 29 of March in our Institute. The Solar week will be also used for a lot of TV emission, radio broadcastings and, articles in newspapers.

TURKEY

Antalya

UCLA Alumni Association/National Audubon Society March 25 - April 1

Dr. Mark Moldwin, professor of Space Physics at UCLA, will lead informative lectures that will focus on the solar eclipse. The group will observe the total solar eclipse near the coastal city of Antalya.

UNITED KINGDOM

Worksop

Auriga Astronomy March 29

Planetarium show and information about solar eclipse. Weather permitting, we will observe the eclipse (from this location, it will be a partial eclipse) and also watch the eclipse webcast provided by NASA.
