Auroras are colorful lights we see in the sky at night. The light from an aurora moves like a big, flowing curtain. We see most auroras near Earth's North Pole and South Pole.

The corona is the Sun's atmosphere. We see the corona during a total solar eclipse.
Coronal Mass Ejections  image Coronal Mass Ejections
Coronal mass ejections are big eruptions coming off the Sun.
Convection Zone image Convection Zone
The convection zone is the part of the Sun where hot gases bubble like boiling water.
Cycle image Cycle
A cycle is something that happens over and over again-like day and night. A cycle is a pattern that repeats.
magnetosphere image Magnetosphere
The magnetosphere is an invisible shield around Earth. The magnetosphere protects us from the solar wind.
photosphere image Photosphere
The photosphere is the part of the Sun that we can see with a solar telescope. Remember, NEVER look directly at the Sun. You can hurt your eyes!

A satellite is an object that orbits Earth or another body in space.

Solar maximum is when the Sun is very active.

Solar minimum is when the Sun is not very active.

The solar wind always flows from the Sun.

A star makes energy. A star gives off light and heat.

A sunspot is a spot on the Sun that is darker and cooler than the rest of the Sun.
venus image Venus
Venus is a planet. Venus is very hot. Sometimes you can see Venus after sunset or before sunrise.

June 8th, 2004 is a special day! Venus will be between us on Earth and the Sun. With special telescopes we will see Venus move in front of the Sun.
